Sophie Martin
Sophie Martin was born in Kendal, Cumbria in June 1985 and she says that growing up in the Lake District has been a huge inspiration to her and her artistic development. She attended Edinburgh College of Art and received a First Class degree in Illustration last year. It was at the Degree show that she was lucky enough to meet Nick and Ana Jones who own ‘The Watermill’ at Little Salkeld, Penrith, coincidentally just a few miles away from where she grew up! They liked her ‘on the spot’ drawings of animals, people and places and approached Sophie with an idea for a book about the mill. Following a few visits to the Mill and lots of busy sketching, the book ‘A Day in the Life of the Watermill’ was formed. Her drawings are always done on location so as to capture a real sense of place and a unique moment in time.
