Julie Lacome
Julie Lacome was born in 1961 into an artistic family in Fife, Scotland. She was educated at Edinburgh College of Art (1978 – 1982) and at Central St. Martin’s (1983). She has worked as a freelance illustrator for over 25 years including commissions for advertising agencies, T.V. companies, greetings card and design companies. The bulk of her work, however, has been for children’s book publishers. To date Julie has published over thirty books including the hugely popular Walking Through The Jungle which was published by her main client, Walker Books Ltd. Her awards include the 2001 Scottish Arts Council Children’s Book Award for Ruthie’s Big Coat.
She lives locally and in recent years has completed a few larger pieces of work as mural paintings for venues in Edinburgh and one for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. One of her local pieces is on display at Gorgie Farm in the children’s part room, whilst another was a commission for the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile. The latter, titled ‘A Mile of Stories’, can be viewed within the centre and shows a fantasy streetscape of the Old Town involving old, new and imaginary characters.
